Nigeria Elections
The GSD community took a special extra interest in the recent federal Nigerian Presidential Elections. Reason? GSD had decided to honour Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, Governor of Nigeria’s most populous state, Kano.
During the hectic run-up to Election Day, GSD had the privilege of a visit from two of Governor Shekarau’s top lieutenants, Mr. Bala Muhammad, Director of Communications for the campaign, and Chief Winston Odumu-Ojobi, Director, International Relations for the campaign.
At an elegant afternoon ceremony in the Chateau itself, Mr. Bala Muhammad, campaign Director of Communications, addressed the assembled students and faculty. Governor Shekarau, he said, was a man of high moral integrity and impressive competence. The Governor, he said, was also a man of compassion who frequently reached across the political divide to help both competitors as well as the ordinary people of Kano.
Chief Winston, campaign Head of International Relations, then told the assembly of some of the challenges and difficulties being successfully faced by Candidate Governor Shekarau. Indeed, he said, Governor Shekarau had won high praise across Nigeria for his sensitive handling of strife and conflict - Kano, as a result, had an excellent track record among all of Nigeria’s states for its stability and coherence.
In addition, it was widely reported that Nigerians of many political persuasions were determined to make of this upcoming contest an exemplary, clean and fair reflection of the true voice of the electorate. Exceptional measures were undertaken to ensure a fair election outcome.
This was not, alas, to be Governor Shekarau’s time. In sweeping results, incumbent Goodluck Jonathan was chosen by the electorate as Nigeria’s President for the term ahead. We wish him every success!
In the meantime, GSD continues with its support and honoring of the fine achievements of Governor Ibrahim Shekarau of Kano.
