In October 98, Ecuador and Peru signed a Peace Treaty that finished what President Clinton defined as “the longest armed conflict in this Hemisphere”.
Presidents Mahuad and Fujimori were nominated for the 1999 Nobel Peace Price following this accomplishment.
The World Wild Fund honoured President Mahuad with the “Gift to The Earth” award in 1999.
Mayor of Quito, August 92-August 98. (Two terms)
During Mr. Mahuad’s administration Fortune Magazine ranked Quito as one of the ten Latin-American cities, which mostly improved the quality of life of its inhabitants.
In his capacity as Mayor of Quito, Mr. Mahuad served as:
Vice chairman of the Ibero-American Capital Cities Association (93-97).
Vice-president of the Latin America and Caribbean Region Mayor’s Coordinating Group for the Defense of Children (94-98).
Latin America’s representative in the ICLEI (International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives) Executive Committee (96-98).
Member of the Ecuadorean National Congress, ‘86-‘88; ‘90-‘92.
Secretary of Labour, 83-84.
Mr. Mahuad has served twice as Chairman of the Christian Democratic Party of Ecuador (87-88) and (91-93) and as a six year vice chairman (91-97) of the All Americas Christian Democratic Association (ODCA), the Christian Democrat’s International.
