Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton
Free and Equal in Dignity Rights
By special invitation of the Permanent Mission of the United States of America to the United Nations in Geneva, GSD students had the pleasure of attending U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's speech celebrating Human Rights Day 2011, at the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations.
The Honourable Mrs. Clinton called on world leaders to stop discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people (LGBT), as one of the remaining human rights challenges. “Some have suggested that gay rights and human rights are separate and distinct,” Mrs. Clinton said, “but in fact they are one and the same.” She also announced that the United States would use diplomacy and $3 million in aid to help expand gay rights around the world.
GSD students commented that this historic speech was a great inspiration for their future career in diplomacy. Students felt honored to be a part of such a new and developing angle to human rights and look forward to more exciting events in the future.
